Salt Lake City International Airport - All Information on Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC)

Salt Lake City International Airport is located 6.4 km/4 mi west of Downtown Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. It serves the areas of Salt Lake City, Wasatch Front, Northern Utah, Southwestern Wyoming and Southeastern Idaho and it is the closest commercial airport for more than 2.5 million people and nearly 1.3 million jobs can be reached within a 30-minute drive from the airport.

The airport’s IATA code is SLC and the ICAO code is KSLC.

The civil-military airport is owned by the City of Salt Lake City and operated by Salt Lake City Department of Airports who also has their offices at the airport. Delta Air Lines use SLC International Airport as a hub.

The airport tends to rank high for on-time departures and arrivals as well as fewest flight cancellations among the major US airports. It is also a major gateway to the Intermountain West as well as the West Coast.

The airport began in 1911 as an airfield and it was mainly used for training and acrobatic flights until 1920 when United States Postal Service (USPS) began air mail services to Salt Lake City. This was when hangars and other buildings began to appear as the airport expanded, and also when the airfield was named Woodward Field after a local aviator named John P. Woodward.

After a visit by Charles Lindbergh and The Spirit of St. Louis in 1927 the airport gained another runway and in 1930 it was renamed Salt Lake City Municipal Airport.

The first terminal was constructed in 1933 and at this point United Airlines was already operating flights between Salt Lake City and New York as well as San Francisco.

As many American airports SLC expanded during the years of World War II and in 1957 42 weekday departures took place through flights provided by Western, United and Frontier.

Over the years a new terminal was constructed, a parking garage was built, a new runway opened, concourses and gates were added and many minor and big upgrades have taken place.

In 2014 ground was broken for the construction of the New SLC terminal complex and Phase 1 of the new terminal was opened beginning with 25 gates in Concourse A in September of 2020 followed by 21 gates in Concourse B in October the same year. The old terminals and concourses were closed and demolition began after Concourse B was opened.

Phase 2 was originally scheduled to be completed in 2027, but because the plummeting air traveling during the Covid-19 pandemic it has been moved forward to 2024.

Utah Air National Guard operates the Roland R. Wright Air National Guard Base on the east side of the airport.

The airport has 4 runways, 1 concrete and 3 asphalt. The concrete runway is 12,000 ft/3,658 m while the three asphalt runways are 12,002 ft/3,658 m, 9,596 ft/2,925 m and 4,893 ft/1,491 m respectively.

Two helipads with asphalt surface can also be found at the airport.

In 2020 12,559,026 passengers came through the airport.
